Midi lessons. Proteus and Cubase

Tutorial for EMU 0404 And Proteus with Easy Midi

To acces virtual sound banks from Proteus,we have to do it trought Cubase. They Both come with sound card EMU-0404. This will bring to us lot's os preset sounds. Also we'll add some effects to these presets.

Step 1. Create a project on Cubase.

Maybe a menu traduction is not 100% equal because my Cubase interface is Spanish. Switch on your midi keyboard, open Cubase LE, select menu File -> New Project, and select a blank(empty) new file. He will ask you where to save the file.

Go to menu: project -> add track -> midi
Go to menu: Devices -> VST sounds. (or VST presets or VST patchs)
This will bring the this window in witch you have to add EMU ProteusXLE. clicking in the first empty box.
Now take a look at a window at the left where we are going to select midi inputs(all), and the output select Proteus.

STEP 2. Select Proteus sound(preset)

In the VST-presets window click the e button. This will open Proteus pluggin.
This is the pluggin Proteus window. At the bottom is a piano for the mouse. It does not sound because we have to open a Presets file. Inside Proteus window goto File-Open and open the file Proteus X Composer.exb
When it's finishe loading the sounds, open the folder at the left called Presets. You can see lot's or presets.Click one one and play with the mouse the piano or use your midi keyboard. When you find one that you like close the Proteus window.

Step 4. Apply effects to the Proteus Preset in Cubase.

Go to menu Devices -> VST Master effects. For each effect pluggin there is a new window to setup the effects. I will select SFX-MAchine-LT from the 12 pluggins that came with my EMU-0404 sound card.
In this window click the upper list and select one effect.Play you midi piano to hear the Proteus preset with that effect.

4. Play with the Proteus Preset on EasyMid

Minimize Cubase and open EasyMid. You will see a message error because the midi input in used by Cubase, don't warry. Ignore it, press a keyon you mid piano and it will sound like in Cubase. Open a midi song and press play. It will sound normal because it's not using Proteus output. Now for change our preset we won't use easymid list of preset that is at the top right; we will switch to Cubase and select a new preset there, and switch to easyMid again.
Save Cubase project so you don't have to do this again. Next time you only have to open the Cubase project before open EasyMid
